White Plains Real Estate

Located in Charles County, White Plains, Maryland, is a culturally diverse, older community with small town ambiance, located a half an hour's drive south of Washington, DC. With just over 5,000 residents, White Plains abuts the newer and larger community of Waldorf, which is a major commercial and industrial region in Southern Maryland. Waldorf's St. Charles Towne Center, a 1.1 million square foot indoor shopping mall, is one of the most successful shopping facilities in the nation.

While Waldorf is more of a bedroom community, White Plains retains more of its rural atmosphere. It is a quiet, low crime community of several parks and excellent K-12 public schools. Higher education is available at nearby topnotch colleges and universities, including the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.

The real estate market in White Plains consists of medium (three or four bedrooms) and large (more than four bedrooms) single-family homes ranging in price from $170,000 to $490,000. The average property sells for $304,000 and was built some time between the 1960s and 1980s. Older, statelier, and historic homes, as well as some ranch-like properties and farms, sell for as high as $1.3 million. Land for custom real estate development is also available.

Most properties in White Plains are owner occupied. Residents are of mixed ages, with mostly families with children, and some young professionals. The local economy is strong. The unemployment rate is lower than nationwide, and twice as many jobs are created in White Plains than in the average American community. The average household income is $75,000, which is more than 50 percent higher than the average household income nationwide.

The White Plains area dates back to the 1870s, when the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad established a train station in Waldorf. A century later the area was known for slot machines, nightclubs and performances by famous singers. Today it is a bustling area home to many government employees, who commute to the nation's capital for work.
