Wheaton Real Estate

Wheaton, Maryland, is a quaint bedroom community located just outside the nation's capital. The community takes its name from Frank Wheaton, a major-general in the Union Army during the Civil War. Wheaton is conveniently located just above the northwest border of Washington DC, along Connecticut Avenue. It is served by two metro stations that mark the ends of the red line: Wheaton and Glenmont.

The center of Wheaton is dominated by commercial real estate, which houses a mall, a number of large stores, shopping plazas full of specialty shops, and many restaurants. Residential real estate is spread out away from the city's core, along quiet, tree-lined streets.

Wheaton real estate is mostly comprised of colonial style, red brick single-family homes of three or four bedrooms. There are also some available row houses and split-level units, as well as historic homes. The average property sells for about $231,000. Wheaton is peaceful and very green, as most real estate lots are wooded and the neighborhood's streets are lined with trees.

The education needs of Wheaton's teenaged residents are served by four elementary schools, three middle schools, and four high schools. A number of excellent private schools are also located here. Wheaton has two acclaimed magnet programs: the Einstein High School Visual Arts Center and the Highland View Interdisciplinary Institute for Research Skills. Continuing education beyond high school is accessible with more than 70 colleges and universities in the area, including Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities.

Wheaton offers its residents a number of recreation activities, many of them outdoors. The community is home to the Wheaton Regional Park, which includes a nature center, riding stables, a picnic area with carousel and miniature train, an athletic complex with tennis bubble, ice rink, in-line skating rink, and ball fields. The park also houses the Brookside Gardens, Montgomery County's award-winning 50 acre public display garden. Rock Creek Park is also nearby, and offers residents easy access to hiking, biking, walking and jogging trails.
