Takoma Park Real Estate

Takoma Park straddles the border of Montgomery County, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Founded in the late 1800s as a Victorian suburb along the railroad, Takoma Park today is one of the national capital's region most interesting neighborhoods.

This culturally diverse community prides itself for its open–mindedness, funky stores and specialized restaurants, low crime rate, and excellent public schools. It is home to some 18,000 residents, among them many writers, musicians, and artists, and is known for its active churches, neighborhood associations, civic groups, and arts organizations.

A major advantage of the community is its accessibility for commuters who work in Washington. Takoma Park is close enough to avoid Beltway traffic, and it is along the metro on a line leading straight into the heart of Washington in less than 10 minutes.

In January 2006, the average home here sold for $402,978 and is a one or two bedroom apartment in a complex or high rise that dates back about 30 years. Larger properties are also available, as some single-family homes. Prices in this densely populated, urbanesque neighborhood mostly range between $200,000 and $450,000, but larger properties, especially those close to the Sligo Creek Park go for as high as $600,000.

Takoma Park is a mixed community of home owners and renters. About half of them are young professionals, although there are some college students as well. The other half is made up of families with children. Renters here pay a premium average monthly rate of $1,225.

As part of Montgomery County Public School System, local residents can send their children to some of the nation's top ranked schools. Teachers here spend more time with pupils individually, than in most schools around the nation, which perhaps explains why local high schoolers perform very well on national standardized tests. Graduation rates are excellent, and most students go on to pursue a college degree.

Takoma Park is a very green community of numerous parks and gardens. The city has received a Tree City USA Award every year since 1984 and a Tree City USA Growth Award every year since 2001.

The city also houses more than 700 small businesses and non-profit organizations. It frequently hosts concerts, exhibits, political crusades, dances, neighborhood parties, quilting bees, and volunteer action projects. The city has an award-winning recycling program, and supports the work of historic preservation groups. Residents who are not yet U.S. citizens are allowed to vote in local elections and hold local elective office.
