Find out how much Springfield Real Estate is worth

Springfield, Virginia, is a relatively new community in historic Fairfax County, nestled between old cities like Alexandria and Burke. Centrally located with easy access to Interstate 95 and the Beltway and its own metro stop, this community is home to mostly workers who commute to and from the nation's capital for work.

A quiet area of tree-lined streets and virtually no crime, Springfield features many parks and open areas, a country club with a 36-hole golf course, and the 70-acre Lake Accotink. It is home to a vast array of dining and shopping options, including the largest shopping mall in the area, the Springfield Mall.

Springfield is home to some 30,000 residents, encompassing various neighboring communities such as West Springfield, Franconia, Burke, and Newington.
Children's education needs here are met by the excellent Fairfax County Public Schools System, which boasts notable performance on national standardized tests and high graduation rates. Most high schoolers from the area continue their education at a university or college.

The Springfield real estate market is relatively affordable compared to other Northern Virginia suburbs. Homes range in type and price. In January 2006, the average property sold for $485,476 and is typically a three or four bedroom single-family home built in a colonial style. Townhouses and condominium properties are also available, as are some older, Victorian estate homes and properties with large lots. Single family and condo homes range in price between $200,000 to $1 million, depending on style and size.

The history of Springfield dates back to 1946 when Realtor Edward R. Carr conceived the master plan for the area. He had studied maps of Northern Virginia and discovered that Springfield had the last sizable accessible tract of undeveloped land within a 12-mile zone around the nation's capital.

Springfield has boomed in the past decade as Northern Virginia grew into a world center for technology companies. Today, more than 4,000 technology companies have offices in the area, including leaders in aerospace, e-commerce, Internet services, software development and telecommunications.
