Silver Spring Real Estate

Silver Spring, Maryland, is an urbanized, but unincorporated area in Montgomery County – is the second largest place in the state after Baltimore. This densely populated major suburb of Washington, DC spreads over a mere 9.4 square miles and is called home by more than 80,000 residents.

Downtown Silver Spring is a haven for food lovers, who can enjoy a cuisine culture almost rivaling nearby Bethesda. Ethiopian, Salvadorian, Indian, and Vietnamese restaurants attract residents and visitors alike. The area is home to the largest concentration of new African immigrants in the United States, which gives it a unique flavor of specialty stores and services. Downtown hosts the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Culture Center which independent and foreign films. It also hosts numerous shops and a few small galleries.

Real estate in Silver Spring sells for an average price of $435,930 (January 2006). This can buy a hip, conveniently located two or three bedroom unit in an apartment complex or high rise building, or a three or four bedroom single-family home further away from Silver Spring's urban center. Most properties here were built before the 1960.

A metro stop serving Washington's most central line, the red line, lays in downtown Silver Spring. Two other stations serve further away areas of the neighborhood. The community is relatively quiet away from its urban center, has little crime, and offers its residents outdoor recreation at nine parks.

There are more than a dozen K-12 schools in Silver Spring, more than half of which are public institutions part of Montgomery County Public School System. The public schools here are some of the nation's best, with high teacher to student ratios, small class sizes, and excellent graduation rates. Most pupils go on to pursue a college degree, and can do so conveniently at one of numerous topnotch colleges and universities in the Washington area.

The median household income in Silver Spring is higher than the national average, while local unemployment is significantly lower than in the average American community.

Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park in the downtown area of Silver Spring is believed to be the site of the original spring.
