Riverdale Park Real Estate

Riverdale Park, Maryland, is a small town in the suburbs of Washington, with just under 7,000 residents today. Nestled between the communities of College Park and Hyattsville, the town derived its name from the historic plantation owned by descendents of Maryland's first family.

Riverdale Park has undergone extensive restoration in recent years, which has turned it into a delightful walk in the history of Maryland. The historic business district offers a replica of a vintage train station, and numerous antique shops for residents and visitors to enjoy. Several homes in this community of tree lined streets are registered as historic homes, including a few stone mansions.

Many families with children make their home in this culturally diverse community of mostly homeowners, although there are few renters. The average household income of local families is $44,041, on par with the national average.

Riverdale Park children enjoy quality public schools served by Prince George's County Public Schools District, as well as at several local private schools. Higher education is easily accessible at nearby University of Maryland's College Park campus.

The real estate market in Riverdale Park consists mostly of three or four bedroom single-family homes built around the 1970s. Some historic homes are also available, as are smaller properties in apartment complexes. The average home sells for $250,000, but there are plenty of ranges to choose from when looking to buy a home here. Some smaller condos are available for under $170,000, and a few historic estates sell for as much as $650,000. Most homes range in price from $170,000 to $490,000.

Riverdale Park, formerly named Riverdale, is rich in history. In 1844, telegraph inventor Samuel Morse transmitted the first successful message from a historic mansion here. A decade later, Charles Benedict Calvert, a descendant of the founding family of Maryland, donated local land that went on to become the University of Maryland. The community hosts many events throughout the year to celebrate its history.
