Poolesville Real Estate

Poolesville, is a friendly community of just over 5,000 residents. Poolesville was named after John Poole, a settler who built the first home here in the late 1700s. As the community grew, Poole went on to keep the first Post Office here, which was called “Poole's Store, MD.” Today, Poole's home is a museum.

Located in Montgomery County, the neighborhood is some 30 miles away from the nation's capitol and home to thousands of workers who commute to and from jobs at federal agencies, law firms, and businesses in Washington.

Although close to major urban areas, Poolesville is a rural community, with a small center and spread out larger estates and farms further away. Most of the real estate here is spacious, averaging three or four bedrooms. The most prevalent home style available is the classic colonial. Most of these homes were built between the 1960s and 1980s, the period when the area experienced its biggest growth. There are some older and historic properties, and occasionally new construction. The average home sold for $451,058 in January 2006.

Poolesville has a public elementary, middle and high schools all of which are part of the Montgomery County Public School System, which is ranked as one of the best in the nation. Residents also have the option of sending their children to private schools in other areas of the county, which are also good. In the public schools, the teacher to student ratio is favorable, class sizes are small, and student perform exceedingly well on national standardized tests. Most graduates go on to pursue college degrees.

Local residents are highly educated, and earn an average income that is more than twice the national average. Most households are families with children, although there is an age mix, with elder folks and some young upwardly mobile singles.
