Olney covers about 13 square miles, and is home to some 31,000 residents. Most households are made up of young families with no children, although there are also older families with children, and upwardly mobile singles. The median age of an Olney resident is 34.
Surrounded on the north by rural farmland and luxury estate homes, Olney offers real estate ranging from $170,000 to half a million dollars. The average home sells for $369,000, which buys a single-family home of three or four bedrooms.
Most real estate here has been built since the 1960s. Much of it dates back only about ten years. An 1817 house built for the farmer who patented the first refrigerator is here, as is an 1838 homestead used as a private girl's boarding school, and Civil War bullets and badges hidden in the dirt behind one of the neighborhood's shopping centers.
