Find out how much Mount Vernon Real Estate is worth

Mount Vernon is a beautiful, well established historic community nestled along the Potomac River about 19 miles southwest of Washington, DC. Just a short drive from Old Town Alexandria, the area is a convenient, attractive, upscale neighborhood mostly populated by workers who during the week commute to jobs closer to Washington.

The area is named after the nearby Mount Vernon plantation, George Washington's estate, which is a popular tourist attraction that draws crowds from around the world. Built of wood in neoclassical Georgian style, the plantation is located on the banks of the Potomac River, and is known for its exceptional landscaping and ancillary buildings.

Mount Vernon runs along the Potomac River, and is known for its clean air and fresh feel. It is a community of low crime and excellent schools. As part of the Fairfax County Public School System, residents send their children to prestigious K-12 schools that boast a high teacher to student ratio and small class size. About 85 percent of high school students graduate, and many of those go on to pursue a college degree.

A fairly diverse neighborhood, Mount Vernon is home to nearly 30,000 residents. The region offers mostly single-family units, but also some condos and town homes. Some ranch style properties are also available. Average homes are large, with about four rooms, and were built between the 1960s and 1980s.

Mount Vernon is rich in architectural styles. Several local homes are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including Pope-Leighey house was built by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1942 that moved from Falls Church to Mount Vernon in the early 1960's. Residents in Mount Vernon take great pride in preserving such a great fortitude of early American History.

The nearby Mount Vernon Trail, which follows the Potomac's Virginia shoreline for 18 miles from outside of Washington to the George Washington's estate, attracts joggers, runners, bikers, and roller bladders all year around. The trail offers majestic views of the river and of Washington DC monuments. There are also several neat sights along the way, including Old Town Alexandria and Arlington National Cemetery.
