A heavily wooded region, McLean is nestled between the George Washington Parkway and the town of Vienna, and is known for its many upscale homes and for having a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

In 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked McLean the eight most educated community nationwide, based on the number of residents (40 percent) who have a master's degree. The area is home to many young, upwardly mobile singles, as well as families.

Residents send their children to some of the country's top K-12 schools, which have very favorable teacher to student rations, good standardized test performance, and high graduation rates. Most youngsters in McLean go on to pursue a college degree.

The average home in McLean sells for about $623,000. Most housing real estate is comprised of three or four bedroom single-family homes. There are some complexes and high rise apartments, and a limited number of row houses and attached homes.

The Central Intelligence Agency headquarters is located in McLean, as are the headquarters of several major companies like Gannett, Freddie Mac, Capital One, and USA Today. Restaurants – some among the best in the nation – abound.

McLean was founded in 1910, when the communities of Lewinsville and Langley merged. The town is named after Edward Beale McLean, who was publisher of The Washington Post from 1916 to 1933.
