Manassas Real Estate

Manassas is one of the oldest and most historic Virginian communities near Washington, DC. What started out as a quiet village has over the years become home to Civil War battle grounds, museums, rolling hills and forests. Today, Manassas is a fairly large suburb that is home to more than 35,000 residents.

The city's modern development is tied to its geographical proximity to Washington, DC. Easily accessible major highways connect the city to employers – technology companies in Fairfax County and federal agencies in Washington, DC. It is a quiet neighborhood with a relatively low crime.

Manassas has an independent school district comprised of five elementary, one middle, and one high school, which are ranked as some of Virginia's better schools, with a favorable teacher to student ratio and high test scores.

The median age for a Manassas neighborhood is 31 years, and the median income for a family is upwards of $70,000. The area offers a variety of old and new housing developments, including single family homes, townhomes, and houses – some of historic significance. Properties tend to be large, of about four bedrooms on average. The average price of a home in January 2006 was $336,000.

Manassas continuously attracts not only new residents, but tourists and historians who spend hours walking and perusing the region's battlegrounds. Located a few miles north of the prized railroad junction of Manassas, the peaceful countryside here bore witness to clashes between the armies of the North and South in 1861 and 1862. In fact, the first major land battle of the American Civil War was fought here, in 1861.

In 1940, more than 5,000 acres of battlefield were turned into Manassas National Battlefield Park, to preserve the scene of the historic fights. Today, the city retains a historic atmosphere, one that is encountered in few American cities. Re-enactments of battles and other activities recalling history are frequently held, attracting thousands of participants. An active historic society has successfully worked for years to preserve the community's historic charm. Spring and summer festivals, weekend farmers' markets and other celebrations – mostly outdoor – also attract new residents and visitors alike.
