Find out how much Leesburg Real Estate is worth

Leesburg, a historic community some 35 miles outside of Washington, DC, is home to about 30,000 residents – a mixture of families with children and singles. Established in 1758, Leesburg is the seat of government for Loudoun County. Originally a settlement called George Town in honor of the reigning monarch of Britain, Leesburg was renamed to honor the influential Lee family of Virginia.

Today the area is a quiet suburb, home to workers to commute to and from work to the nation's capitol and neighboring Northern Virginia communities. Real estate here is as mixed as the community itself: there are a few old, established homes that sell for as high as $1.9 million, but some modest condo or row house units sell in the low $160,000s. The average home here sold in January 2006 for $561,046 and tends to be a three or four bedroom single-family home that has been built since the 1960s.

Leesburg's proximity to Washington makes it a thriving community. Its unemployment rate is less than half the national average, and recent job growth here is three times as high as in a average American community.

The town offers residents a low crime rate, excellent shopping and dinning venues, parks, historic sites and monuments, and dozens of other recreational activities. Leesburg was a historic district, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and is cited as one of the best preserved and most picturesque downtowns in Virginia.

Area residents send their children to good public and private schools. Public schools here boast high test scores and graduation rates. Most students go on to pursue a college degree, a fact reflected in the average resident education level – more than 40 percent of Leesburg residents have a bachelor's degree or higher.

Leesburg has several claims to fame. During the War of 1812, the town served as the temporary capital of the United States when the valuable papers of the Federal Archives, including the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, were brought to town for safekeeping. President James Monroe resided just south of town at Oak Hill, where he wrote the Monroe Doctrine in 1823.

Leesburg was also the site of the Civil War Battle of Ball's Bluff, a bloody Confederate victory fought on the banks of the Potomac River. The battlefield is marked by one of America's smallest national cemeteries. In more recent history, the town was the home of World War II General George C. Marshall, architect of the famous Marshall Plan that re-built post-war Europe.
