Find out how much Greenbelt Real Estate is worth

Greenbelt, Maryland, was settled in 1937 as a planned, public cooperative community built by the federal government. Today, it is home to some 22,000 residents of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Modeled after English garden cities of the 19th century, Greenbelt took its name from the belt of green forestland with which it was surrounded and from the belts of green between neighborhoods that offered easy contact with nature. Today, Greenbelt remains fairly green, even though it is located just off the typically congested Beltway.

The community is a popular home among workers who commute to the nation's capital for work, because due to their proximity, they can avoid highway traffic. Better yet, they can take the metro, which stops in Greenbelt.

The community's education needs are served by Prince George's County Public Schools, which are ranked as relatively good performers when compared to the average American public school. The jewel of the local education system is the Eleanor Roosevelt High School, ranked 11th best amongst high schools nationwide.

Home owners and renters live together in this community, where the average home sells for $272,260, a price that is very affordable comparable with other District communities in the area. Most homes here are row houses or other types of attached units, with two bedrooms on average. There are some slightly larger single-family homes that, and some properties in apartment complexes or high rise buildings.

Most homes in this relatively quiet, tree-lined community sell for an average of $100,000 to $330,000, although a few properties sell for under $100,000, and some historic homes sell for upwards of $450,000.

Greenbelt is home to the Goddard Space Flight Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The U.S. National Security Agency is also nearby. The city has gone into the history books as the first community in the United States built as a federal venture in housing. From the beginning it was designed as a complete city, with businesses, schools, roads and facilities for recreation and town government. It was and remains noted for its interior walkways, underpasses, its system of inner courtyards and one of the first mall-type shopping centers in the United States.
