Glenarden, Maryland, is a city located in Prince George's County, some 10 miles outside of the nation's capital. The area around Glenarden was first settled in the early 1900s. It became a city in 1939. With a population of about 6,500 culturally diverse residents, the community is located just off the Washington Beltway near Route 50. Its proximity to the nation's capital and nearby thriving technology and medical research organizations make Glenarden a popular home for commuters who drive or take public transport to and from work.

Glenarden residents are well educated, with the percentage of college degree holders being much higher than the national average. This translates into a higher than average local household income, which tops $60,000 and is about one-third higher than the national average household income.

The education needs of Glenarden youngsters are met by excellent public schools excellent, which boast good performance on national standardized tests and high graduation rates. The teacher to pupil ratio is also high, which means that local students get more individual attention than the average American pupil. Most high schoolers go on to pursue a college degree.

The city is very active with its citizens, and runs numerous recreation programs such as a basketball that targets young adults ages 17-21.
