Find out how much Gaithersburg Real Estate is worth

Gaithersburg, Maryland, a historic community of some 53,000 residents located within a 40-minute drive of the nation's capital, is a city that touts itself as a place where “Character Counts.” The history of Gaithersburg dates back to 1765 when it was a small agricultural settlement called “Log Town.” The town is named after Benjamin Gaither who built a house in 1802 on the property where the town's famous Forest Oak tree used to grow. The tree was over 275 years old in 1975, when a boring was taken to determine its age.

Today, the city is a diverse region that offers residents more than low crime and good schools. Gaithersburg has won numerous community awards including being named Tree City USA and a winner of the U.S. Conference of Mayors City Livability Award. The city's historic Old Town offers shopping, dinning, and an excellent venue for public events throughout the year.

Gaithersburg is known for its beautifully landscaped parks, public streets and medians. Since 1970, the city has grown from a neighborhood of three parks consisting of nine acres of land to a city with 23 parks and more than 522 acres of parkland. The city has numerous active citizen organizations, and a community policing program that has won awards and drawn praise from agencies across the nation.

The real estate market in Gaithersburg offers a mix of historic homes and newer developments. It is a densely built region of mostly two bedroom units in apartment complexes or high rise buildings that sell on average for $390,620 (January 2006). Singe-family properties and town homes are also available, typically ranging in price from $100,000 to more than a million dollars.

Quality of life is important to Gaithersburg residents. Children enjoy camps, after-school programs and plenty of outdoor activities. As part of the Montgomery County Public School System, children here attend some of the country's most prestigious K-12 schools which boast high graduation rates.

Gaithersburg is the area's fourth largest retail zone, with numerous malls and shopping plazas. The city hosts parades, festivals, and various outdoor activities for adults and children to enjoy.

Gaithersburg has undergone significant changes in recent years. Where there was once rolling fields of wheat, now you will find roads, housing developments and commercial ventures. Yet, the city retains its historic sense, with a number of historic communities and traditions that have been preserved including the creation of the Brookes, Russell and Walker Historic Districts.
