Fairfax Real Estate

The city of Fairfax, like many other Northern Virginia suburbs, has grown in the past few decades from a rural setting of rolling hills and farms to a densely populated, thriving community. The city houses some 21,000 residents of diverse backgrounds on a land area of six square miles.

Its close proximity to Washington, DC, makes it an ideal location for workers whose jobs take them to the nation's capital each day. Fairfax is conveniently located off major highways, and has a metro stop at the community of Vienna.

The city dates back to the pre-Revolutionary War era, so its Old Town is filled with historic buildings and landmarks. Over the years these sites have become intermingled with cozy restaurants, quaint shops, art galleries, and other entertainment facilities. The Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Fairfax also offers its residents recreation at 21 parks with pavilions, sports fields, and trails. Retail centers provide an abundance of shopping. Several large malls are located within a short distance of the city.

The real estate market in calm, low crime Fairfax is predominantly made up of single-family homes. The average home sale is of a three or four bedrooms detached home built in the mid 1900s, which sells for about $254,000.
Some newer and older homes, as well as apartments and row houses are also available.

Fairfax residents send their children to prestigious K-12 public schools that are part of the Fairfax County Public Schools System, one of the highest ranking public school districts in the country. Fairfax High School and the Fairfax Academy for Communications Arts are among the excellent local education facilities. The city is also home to higher education institutions like George Mason University, one of the largest in the Virginia state system.

The area that now comprises the city of Fairfax was first settled in the early 1700s by farmers migrating from Virginia's Tidewater region. The county was established in 1742; the city was established in 1874.
