Damascus Real Estate

Damascus, Maryland, is a peaceful but growing suburb located 20 miles northwest of downtown Washington, DC. Damascus is conveniently located just off Interstate-270 and the Beltway. Edward Hughes, named by President James Madison planned the town. Hughes received permission from Congress for a postal route through town. Hughes called his town "The Pleasant Plains of Damascus" after Damascus, Syria, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

The community is home to about 15,000 culturally diverse residents. The average property in quiet, low crime Damascus sells for about $270,000, and is a single-family home of three or four bedrooms, typically built in colonial or rambler style, and dating back to the 1970s. Homes of various sizes, as well as row houses and units in apartment complexes are also for sale. There are a few older homes, and a growing availability of new construction.

Prices range mostly between $170,000 and $330,000, but there is variety in the market. Some properties sell for under $150,000, and about a fifth of the properties for sale are listed at higher than $350,000. A few select larger estates sell for close to $1 million.

Damascus is a high income earning community, where the average household reports an income of close to $100,000, which is more than twice the national average. Most residents have a bachelor's or higher education degree, and work in managerial and executive, or high positions within the federal government. The typical household is composed of a family with children.

The education needs of youngsters here are met by the excellent service of the Montgomery County Public Schools System, which is recognized as one of the best districts in the country. High school students get more individual attention than in the average school, and they tend to perform well on national standardized tests, graduate, and go on to pursue a college degree.

Damascus offers its resident outdoor recreation at five community parks. It offers excellent shopping and dinning venues, and proximity to larger towns such as Rockville, Bethesda, and of course, the nation's capital.
