College Park Real Estate

College Park, Maryland, is a lively and thriving suburb located about five miles northeast of downtown Washington, DC. Known for and named after its enormous center campus for the University of Maryland, College Park over the years has changed from a college town to a community that attracts a growing number of families with children.

Real estate here is more affordable than in neighboring Maryland suburbs. Its two metro stations – College Park and Greenbelt – make it a quick and easy commute into the nation's capital. The average home in this area sold for $365,602 in January 2006. This amount buys a modest single-family home of two bedrooms, built before the 1960s, typically in a rambler or colonial style.

Properties are also available in a larger size, newer, and in complexes and high rise buildings. The vast majority of real estate sells in the range of $225,000 to $330,000, although there are more affordable smaller units, as well as larger and newer homes selling for $330,000 to $525,000.

College Park residents are a middle income mix of families, college students, and young professionals more than half of who have a bachelor's degree or higher. Many residents work for the federal government in Washington, while others are executives, managers, or sales and service workers.

This culturally diverse, low crime neighborhood of some 25,000 residents offers a wide variety of dining, entertainment and shopping venues. It is home to furniture mecca IKEA. College Park is home to the world's oldest continuously operated airport, established in 1909. A 27,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility and gallery here feature a one-eighth scale replica of the hangar the Wright Brothers built to house their first military airplane.

The city offers residents music, theater, dance and more art at the performing arts center within the University of Maryland campus in a 318,000 square feet venue attracts regional audiences and national and international professionals.
