Chevy Chase Real Estate

Chevy Chase is a self-governing municipality located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Its incorporated boundaries extend to East-West Highway on the north, Connecticut Avenue on the east, Bradley Lane on the south and one block east of Wisconsin Avenue on the west.

The town of Chevy Chase was first developed in the 1890s by two men, Francis G. Newlands and William M. Stewart, who made their fortunes in the gold and silver mines of the west. After purchasing thousands of acres of land in the area just north of Washington D.C., they began a massive development project which included extending Connecticut Avenue north into Maryland, building a $1.5 million electric railway, installing a water and sewer system, and building roads and other infrastructure.

Real development came here only after cars in the early 1900s made it possible to live outside of the District of Columbia and commute. This led to a construction boom in the town. As the population grew, new sidewalks and sewers were built, and more trees planted in public spaces.

Today, about 9,000 people live here, among them some of the capital's influential movers and shakers. Numerous foreign dignitaries and ambassadors are Chevy Chase residents as well. The area is quiet, clean, with tree lined streets and a low crime rate. Most real estate here is established homes built in the mid-1900s. The average single family home or condo sold for $939,579 in January 2007. Typical smaller homes can be modest with two bedrooms. Bigger estates have vast, landscaped gardens and six or seven bedrooms.

The local schools are excellent, boasting high test scores and graduation rates. Many graduates go on to pursue college degrees, and enjoy proximity to topnotch higher education institutions such as Georgetown, American, and George Washington universities. Chevy Chase has the highest percentage of highly educated residents in the country, according to a recent study. (Neighboring Bethesda came in second.) This is reflected in the median income, which at $99,520 is more than twice the national average.
