Centreville is a thriving Fairfax County suburb of Washington, DC that is home to about 49,000 residents. Historians think Centreville might have been the first proper town within the modern boundaries of Fairfax County, settled under the name of Newgate or New Gate at some point in the 17th or 18th century.
Although historic, the urban neighborhood was mostly developed after the 1950s. Most growth occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s due the influx of technology companies into the area.
As of January 2006, the average home in Centreville sold for $411,548. Single family homes range from $90,000 to $1.3 million. Homes here are mostly established (but not old) single-family homes of about three or four bedrooms. Rowhouses and attached homes are available, as well as new housing developments.
A major draw to Centreville is its excellent K-12 schools, part of the Fairfax County Public School System. Class sizes are small, teacher to student ratios high (18:1), and students perform superbly on national standardized tests. There are many interscholastic sports programs for students. Graduation rates are high at 95%, and most students go on to pursue a college degree.
Centreville is mostly populated by families with children, although there are pockets of senior communities, as well as young upwardly mobile singles and some college students. Most homes are owner occupied but there are some renters. Residents are highly educated, with more than 50% of the general population holding a bachelor's degree or higher. The average household income is above $90,000, more than twice the national average.
There are numerous shops and restaurants in downtown, as well as an array of specialty stores and boutiques. Centreville offers the classic suburban features of shopping and dining plazas, cinema complexes, and recreational centers. The area's crime rate is very low compared to neighboring regions, and various major banking and technology companies are headquartered here.
