Located near the Middletown Valley, formed by Braddock and South Mountains some 55 miles outside of the nation's capital, Brownsville, Maryland, is a community of fresh air, low crime, and a friendly rural atmosphere. The region surrounding Brownsville was settled in the late 1700s.
The community, home to a couple of thousand residents, offers beautiful views and plenty of outdoor recreation, including a number of great parks and golf courses. Legend has it that as a young lieutenant, George Washington surveyed the area nearby Brownsville and called the Middletown Valley one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen.
The real estate market here is varied. Most available properties sell in the price range of $100,000 and $300,000, with a few larger homes on roomier land lots selling in the range of $310,000 and $460,000. The few available large farms with beautiful grounds sell in the range of $1.2 million and $1.6 million.
The average home sales price here is just under $200,000, which typically buys a rambler or colonial brick home of three or four bedrooms. The area was mostly developed since the 1960s, but there is plenty of new construction, and some older homes can be found. Newer additions to the real estate market include row houses and other types of attached homes, as well as some small apartment buildings.
Brownsville students attend great public schools that are part of the Frederick County Public School District, home to several Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. National test scores are high among local high schoolers. Most of them graduate from high school, and many go on to pursue a college education.
Brownsville is a growing area, with a thriving economy. Unemployment among local residents is much lower than the national 5 percent unemployment rate. Recent job growth has been faster, and economists predict that local future job growth will outpace the national average by more than 14 percent.
