Bethesda, Md., is an affluent and trendy suburb just 15 minutes outside of Washington DC, is an up-and-coming place for families and singles alike. Home to 27,000 residents, the neighborhoods boasts trendy boutiques, luxurious salons, and exquisite yet affordable restaurants. With its brick lined sidewalks and trees covered with white lights year round, Bethesda is a joy to stroll around on a weekend afternoon or an evening alike.

The area was developed between the 1940s and 1960s, so most housing dates back to those years, although there are some newer developments. In the late 1990s Bethesda saw the development of Bethesda Row, a shopping and entertainment complex complete with an independent cinema house, which attracts many non-residents to the region on weekends. Bethesda is beloved by shopping enthusiasts, who are just a short drive from Montgomery, Galleria, and White Flint Malls, not to mention the numerous street side boutiques of central Bethesda.

Bethesda is renowned for its extensive collection of restaurants—180 were listed at the end of 2004—offering cuisine ranging from Afgan to Vietnamese. Bethesda is also home to two vibrant farmers markets, the Montgomery Farm Woman's Cooperative Market and the Bethesda Farmer's Market, as well as numerous cinemas and art galleries.

There is a place for the sports enthusiast here, with the Capital Crescent Trail starting off by the Barnes and Noble bookstore and finishing at the banks of the Potomac River miles south into Georgetown. Bethesda is also convenient for hikers, who have unlimited and easy access to Rock Creak Park trails.
Bethesda is home to a number of landmarks, such as the 150-year-old National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world. Important locally-based institutions include the vast National Institutes of Health, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division. Bethesda is also home to the National Naval Medical Center, commonly referred to as Bethesda Naval Hospital, where many famous Americans such as Senator Joseph McCarthy passed away and the infamous John F. Kennedy autopsy was performed.
