Arlington Real Estate

Arlington is an urban county of about 26 square miles – within which there are no incorporated towns or cities – that lies across the Potomac River from Washington DC. It is among the nation's most densely populated jurisdictions. Nearly 200,000 people live here, and commute to work to either neighboring Northern Virginia cities, or to Washington DC. The region is rich in job opportunities with federal and local governments, thousands of subcontracting companies, law firms, international organizations, and dozens of technology companies, including AOL.

The area, home to high profile landmarks like the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, offers the highest level of education available in the nation. Its schools are ranked the best for their favorable ration of teachers to students, and their excellent graduation rates. Home to a higher educated population, Arlington high schoolers are also more likely than the national average student to go on to college or university.

Arlington has a crime index that is much lower than that of Washington. This is helped by the presence of more than 50 civic organizations and scores of citizen groups. Aside from caring for and guarding their communities, these groups organize fairs, festivals, and other events for adults and kids to enjoy. There are almost 200 public parks and playgrounds, and endless miles of biking and jogging trails. Community centers, theaters, and libraries abound. So do museums, shops, and restaurants.

Arlington is not only in close driving distance to Washington, but also connected to the capital via several metro stations, which make an ideal spot for commuters.

Real estate in Arlington is widely varied. There are older and established homes, mostly with three of four bedrooms. Ownership of condos is high, although there are some older row houses and attached homes. The median home value is about $434,000, and the appreciation rate is more than 100 percent. Rental properties are also available, but are costly compared to other Virginia locations, and very high cost relative to the nation's rent averages.
